Yet Another Affordable Floral Pump

Why I Love It

I've been seeing floral pumps everywhere but the most versatile pair I've found is this one from Banana Republic. The black/grey/white combo matches with most of my outfits and isn't too loud for those more conservative office days. They're only $128 at Banana Republic - but I noticed they run very large - I had to exchange my usual size 9 for a size 8!

How to Wear A Midi Skirt to Work

I love the midi skirt trend - it is flattering on almost anyone - highlights your waist and shows off the smallest part of your leg. I've been struggling with how to wear a midi skirt for work, but was inspired by this white Topshop skirt. I've made it more formal with a striped jacket and a coordinating bag and pump.

Career vs Biological Clock?

Career vs Biological Clock?

For pretty much all of my career, I was told not to worry about that pesky biological clock.  Like probably everyone else, I was vaguely aware of fertility declining after age 35, but that was about the sum total of my knowledge on the subject.  I did interrogate my OB/GYN every year about whether I should panic, and the answer was always "no, you're healthy, there's nothing to worry about!"  My doctor for nearly ten years, she made it a point to tell me she had plenty of patients who got pregnant in their late 30s and even 40s, which was confirmed by my girlfriend (in her 30s) who told me stories about being the youngest mom at her kids' school.  And of course, all the movie star moms having gorgeous little children in their 40s - Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman, Salma Hayak, Tina Fey -  just reiterated what I was hearing everywhere.

Then early this year, I saw the book The Big Lie by Tanya Selvaratnam.  Here's a zinger from the book's first paragraph:

Thinking you can have kids when you are ready is a flawed belief with devastating consequences.  I am one of millions who made that mistake.

A Harvard grad who met her husband in her mid thirties, Tanya tells her story and gathers stories, facts and statistics from other career-oriented women, doctors, fertility specialists, and feminists in her book.

Tanya cites the following statistics when it comes to our egg counts as we age:

The number of eggs at our first menstrual cycle is around 300,000 to 400,000.  By age 30 we're down to between 39,000 and 52,000 (13 percent of the eggs we had at puberty).

Strictly biologically speaking, our best time to have children (in our 20s) is also the best time for us to build our career. That's a lot to chew on, ladies.  Take a read and tell us what you think!
